Comments:

  • I was disappointed in the FAAN Holiday Cookbook. I expected there to be more recipes and for there to be some original recipes but it was a very short collection. I do think the recipes in it come out good overall. I would prefer to just have gotten their larger collection and searched for things to serve at holidays myself rather than buying this book.
  • Food Allergy News recipes were the first I used for baked goods when I first entered the world of allergen-free baking for my son 14 years ago!

Comments:

  • Cybele Pascal's book rocks my world. It made dealing with the craziness of allergies so very very much better. The recipes are ones that my entire family enjoys (as opposed to just cooking for my FAK.)
  • Cybele Pascal's book was hard for me to use. We don't use (Ener-G) egg replacer so many of the recipes were out for us. Many of the ingredients were not easily found.
  • Cybele Pascal's cookbook is incredible. The recipes come out tasting like fine restaurant food.
  • Cybele's cookbook is amazing. There is a great mixture of gourmet recipes that are easy to fix as well as simpler meals and comfort foods. Her soups are fantastic and I am constantly asked if the foods are really safe. No one can believe I don't have dairy or eggs in the recipes. A must have.
  • I like that the Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook uses common ingredients that can be found at the grocery store. With our family not avoiding wheat, we often do not have the ingredients in our house that many wheat-free recipes require. I also like that Ms. Pascal provides instructions on how to incorporate common allergens that were omitted from the recipe that your family can have.
  • The Whole Food Allergy Cookbook is my FAVORITE! DD is allergic to soy, wheat, and dairy and it's difficult to find delicious recipes for a 2 year old! This is the best!
  • Some recipes have spelt (wheat), a ton have coconut and oat flour. Also - the author's insistence on buying organic puts further limitations on a desperate market of people who are already so limited in their food choices. As do ingredients such as maple sugar, juniper berries and Ox Tail, for example. Also - the brands she instructs the user to use have major cross-contamination issues with common allergens. I was excited to get this one, but actually disappointed.
  • The Pascal cookbook is the one that I refer to most often although a few of the recipes are not good and others a little too exotic for us.
  • We really enjoy the Whole Food Allergy Cookbook. It focuses on eating whole foods in addition to food allergies.
  • The food comes out tasting so amazingly good. Also, I am into organic, whole foods cooking.
  • Because the recipes are ones that everyone can enjoy - even people without allergies.
  • My whole family loves these recipes. They also don't try to substitute for alleriges. The recipes just happen to not have Top 8 allergens.
  • It's well-written and it has recipes for simple to exotic cuisine.
  • Cybele has a great mix of gourmet and simple meals, yet all are simple to fix. She provides good tips in her book. Her soups are out of this world and I always get compliments when I fix her recipes. They are recipes my 2 year old likes as well as what the rest of the adults like. You look like you have cooked a gourmet meal when in fact it was a very simple meal and her recipes are easy to follow. Cybele really makes you look like a chef!

  • Our daughter is allergic to wheat, soy, eggs, dairy, nuts, tree nuts, sunflower seeds, oats and shellfish. This cookbook by far had the most extensive set of recipes. These were recipes for the entire family not just an allergic child. We tried some out at Thanksgiving and the entire family loved them.

  • Tasty, simple, kid friendly recipes. I also have learned how to use different flour combos from her recipes to take to other recipes
  • Real recipes from all categories of foods (breakfast, lunch, sides, mains, salad dressings). Also, additional tips help you with tweaking recipes on your own.
  • Because she focuses on eating whole foods and limited processed foods from the diet, as well as food allergies. It is also free of top 8 and doesn't rely heavily on soy like many cookbooks do.
  • The recipes are so tasty, they are not any more difficult than other cookbooks, the ingredients are easily found. We are dealing with many food allergies (wheat, dairy, egg, barley, peanut and tree nut) and she leaves them all out, so I don't have to change the recipes at all. I use the book at least once a week, maybe more. The recipes are advanced beginner level (the level of many Cooking Light recipes) so they sometimes have a long list of ingredients, but the extra flavors have a big impact on taste. I cannot praise this cookbook enough!

Comments:

  • Bakin without Eggs is an excellent book for those with egg allergies or just trying to avoid eggs for other health reasons.
  • Bakin' Without Eggs is by far the best cookbook I have ever used! I can't begin to tell you how good the recipes are, how diverse the choices are and how easy to make. You don't need a bunch of odd ingredients to make regular, really good stuff without eggs in them.
  • Bakin' Without Eggs sometimes has ingredients in the wrong order (doesn't list dry and wet separately) and doesn't always give instructions when an experienced baker might know what to do. Specific tips about measuring or other technique related issues would be good since the chemistry is so important in egg-free baking. I've had some luck but those recipes which rely heavily on baking soda or powder I've usually failed.
  • We've tried many recipes from this book and they've all been delicious -- some of the recipes are now staples in our house (cornbread, pancake/waffle batter, sugar cookies, and more). Best of all, the recipes are quick and easy. Some recipes do contain nuts (our daughter is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts, too), but we just leave those off and the recipe still turns out fine.
  • Ermo's [sic] book has a better pancake recipe, the scalloped potatoes did NOT taste like the real thing. Most of the main dishes were things anyone could have come up with. For example, a supposedly "RAVE reviews" recipe is just rice cooked with beef bouillon and onion - who hasn't already done something like that even without allergies. Also alot of the recipes spent too much time on things that could be found safely in the store (e.g pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce, chicken nuggets). Let's face it, allergies take up alot of our cooking time, if I'm actually able to buy a convenience item, I'm going to!! Overall, kind of a waste of money - the creamy noodle recipe is good though!
  • I have to say that I have tried about 8 or so recipes, and all of them were a success! When baking without eggs, it is a definate challenge, I don't know what I would do without this book.
  • I think that the Rosemary elmo [sic] book uses too much non-subbable dairy and nuts for us.
  • Eggs are the hardest ingredient to replace in baking. These recipes turn out great tasting (and looking) baked goods. We are dairy free too but can easily sub soy products for most recipes.
  • Good cookbook for egg free, but if you are dealing with multiple allergies, many recipes contain milk and nuts, which need substitutions.
  • I LOOOOVE my Bakin' Without Eggs cookbook!
  • Baking without eggs does have alot of dairy in the recipes, but I've subsituted the milk for potato milk with great results. The substitute cake yogurt bismark cake recipe (the one that uses a regular Duncan Hines cake mix) is the answer to my prayers - quick, easy and tastes just like a regular cake mix. This book does contain ALOT of chocolate recipes so if you're allergic to chocolate like we are beware that half the recipes in the book won't be usable.
  • Baking Without Eggs would be an excellent cookbook for someone allergic to only eggs and could be a very good cookbook for someone with multiple food allergies who can have wheat. Quite a few recipes use nuts, but the nuts can be easily omitted. Many recipes also use milk or milk-containing products. These may be substituted; however, we have had a hard time finding locally soy-free substitutions for some of these ingredients and haven't been able to try those recipes.
  • I have had to make adjustments to every recipe in Bakin' Without Eggs that I've tried. None worked according to the recipe listed. However, once I "fixed" the ingredient amounts, they've all turned out great.
  • It allowed us to have sweet baked treats!
  • The recipes are great! It is very easy to sub out the milk and leave out the nuts. The treats do not taste 'special'.
  • Egg free-cooking is the most difficult task.

  • It's an old friend -- it encouraged me as on of the first "new" cookbooks I found -- others had been out for a long time, and they all seemed to think that it was enough to exclude dairy and eggs and wheat. I remember an awful lot of recipes that called for *nuts* -- they made me feel worse than trying to adapt from a regular cookbook...
  • All of the recipes have turned out well. It's free of two of our major allergens (eggs, peanuts) and I can easily adapt to remove milk in most of the recipes. It doesn't call for alternative ingredients that I don't need to use (i.e. gluten-free flours when I can use wheat).
  • For me, entrees have been relatively easy to adapt. Baking, however, has been the most difficult thing to do without having the use of eggs.
  • Because the recipes actually WORK without eggs and taste great. Substitutions for dairy products are easy and the recipes don't require a lot of specialty ingredients.

This cookbook already has recipes that are egg-free & I have found subbing for egg can be more difficult than subbing for Milk & other ingredients.

  • I was rather disappointed in the FAAN cookbook. I do use a few recipes from it, but as a whole, I was not impressed.
  • I wish I could give the FAAN book a higher rating, but again, for someone with a household of multiple food allergies, finding recipes that were exclusive of all 8 common allergens were far and few between.
  • Problem with FAAN cookbook is the organization of the recipes and a not so good index. Not easy to find things, but ok recipes.
  • The FAAN cookbooks are a great start. I had trouble getting a good many of these recipes to turn out.
  • The Food Allergy News Cookbook is of very limited use for those dealing with a wheat allergy.
  • Great recipes, clearly marked with allergens it avoids, my allergic child likes the recipes
  • Maybe it's my favorite because it was my first food allergy book upon diagnosis of my son's food allergies. It just feels like a trusted companion. I can use most of these recipes and half of them are keepers. My kids are allergic to wheat, dairy, eggs, and treenuts, soy. Most of the recipes out there are dairy and egg-free, but use wheat. It's hard to find recipes that are truly Top 8 free.

  • Cooking Free only eliminates a few common allergens.
  • I think that "Cooking Free" is an awesome cookbook. Every recipe I have tried from this book has been successful. My dh who does not like gf baking very much has approved of every recipe I have made from this book. I wish that Carol Fenster would put out a follow up cookbook to this one.
  • Everything I have tried works and is delicious!! Recipes are simple and if we are able to add foods like eggs into our diet, I can do it easily. Even if we could add gluten in, I am sure that the recipes will still work. Most allergy cookbooks are not gluten free and I still have to experiment and have a lot of failures. She also gives you lots of ideas for substitutes if you are trying to alter your own recipes.
  • This was the first cookbook I purchased when we realized my son had FA's. I haven't even felt the need to purchase any others as we love the recipes in this cookbook. I also have found her resource section in the back to be extremely useful.
  • The reason I picked this above Emro's book is simply because she offers a broader selection of foods, everything from crabcakes to brownies. Also, I appreciate her appendix for the light it sheds on trying to make substitutions in baking and cooking. It has truly been invaluable to me. As for desserts, I will say that I've enjoyed the ones that I've made from Emro's book as much as I've enjoyed Carol Fensters (which is A LOT!). Both books provide excellent recipes for desserts.

  • I've had more success with the recipes from Great Foods Without Worry than from any other source. My ds loves the cookies, biscuits, pies, and cakes I have made using these recipes.
  • My mother was finally able to cook allergen-free for my son with confidence by using the Great Foods Without Worry cookbook. Not all of the recipes were winners, but she found several that were very good.
  • This was the book that most closely matched our allergy set, so I was able to make many of the recipes without having to make my own substitutions.
  • I was FINALLY able to make my son things like oatmeal cookies and banana muffins that actually tasted good. Soooo many other cookbooks had the recipes but not the flavor.
  • I've had success with every recipe I've tries. My ds has enjoyed everything I've made for him using these recipes.

  • Dairy-Free, Egg-Free, Kid Peasing Recipes & Tips - most seemed obvious, or just sill
  • I think Theresa Kingma's book is excellent. It is kid-friendly and filled with ideas for families busy with life. I think it would make an excellent addition to any cookbook collection for those dealing with dairy, egg, peanut, and nut allergies. We also have sesame allergy in our family and only a few of the recipes call for it.
  • I use my 'Kid Pleasing Recipes' cookbook at LEAST3x/week.
  • My only problem with Theresa Kingma's book is that the majority of her baked goods are complete rip-offs of Rosemarie Emro's recipes with tiny changes to the order of ingredients to make them look like her own. I feel bad for Emro.
  • Theresa Kingma's book is good, but very heavy on the soy.
  • Alot of the recipes in the dairy-free, egg-free kid pleasing recipes didn't really turn out (at least in the baking section), the birthday cake no one liked, the pumpkin bars were awful, the sugar recipe was blah and crumbly (not able to roll out as claimed),
  • The recipes are quick and easy...and not one of them didn't taste "normal"
  • Easy to find ingredients at the regular grocery. Easy to make recipes.
  • THE RECIPES ACTUAL TASTE GOOD AND ARE VERY EASY TO MAKE

  • The strawberry cake recipe in What's to Eat? is to die for.
  • Linda Coss's book has many easy to make recipes.
  • The Coss cookbook I have not even used b/c the recipes sound so unappealing to me.
  • What's to Eat? has been a very helpful resource. It was the first allergy cookbook we bought, and it is still the one I turn to for recipes and ideas. The recipes are easy-to-follow, and they turn out well!
  • What's to Eat? has great recipes for the basics - chocolate chip cookies, chocolate cakes, etc
  • I use "What's to Eat" by Linda Coss for almost all my cooking. I could not live without this cookbook!
  • What's To Eat? is one of my favorite allergy cookbooks. Very easy, simple recipes.
  • Linda Coss' cookbook is awesome. I have had great success with each recipe.
  • Linda Coss's book is easy to use and the recipes are great. Pascal's book looks like it contains great recipes, but too me, they are a little too complicated and require too many specialty ingredients to make on a regular basis.
  • Linda Coss's cookbook is down to earth with the most amazing cookie recipe I have ever found. Both are wonderful for our family.
  • The recipes in "What's to Eat . . ." were not very good. We tried many of them, and didn't like the taste at all!
  • What's to Eat? this may be a useful book if you really like mustard and sun-dried tomatoes since they are in a large majority of recipes. My son just so happens to be allergic to mustard and we don't liek sun-dried tomatoes.
  • What's to Eat? was another title that was of limited usefulness to the wheat-allergic diner.
  • Easy recipes that are delicious and kid friendly.
  • Descriptions, great dessert recipes. Good quality foods.
  • I love the recipes and it's always completely reliable.
  • Very good dessert recipes, but I can't use many of the entree recipes because there are too many beef recipes, or fish recipes. (Daughter can't eat beef and doesn't like fish!)
  • I like that Ms. Coss uses simple, common ingredients and that the recipes are easy. We love the Wheat Germ Baking Powder Biscuits, Chocolate Layer Cake, and Whole Wheat Pumpkin Bread. I was very excited to hear that she is coming out with another cookbook soon.
  • I wrote it! :) (Well...at least I'm honest)
  • I like the way the recipes turn out. The ingredients are easy to find, and the directions are simple to follow. You can tell it was written by someone who actually fed a child with food allergies, and that these are recipes the author actually would make herself.
  • Has some very simple but tasty recipes, stuff you would have in your kitchen
  • The recipes are simple, delicious, practical for our lifestyle, use easy to find ingredients, please everyone, and most people don't know they are "allergy safe" recipes...they are just good! I can easily substitute what I need to also make them gluten-free. This cookbook is falling apart I use it so much.

  • Sophie-Safe Cooking is Awesome, and we don't even need to avoid wheat! Recipes are simple, tasty and use "normal" ingredients found at the "regular" grocery store. A good cookbook to introduce others to food allergy cooking. They don't have to shop for odd ingredients to make to make something yummy.

  • Easy to use. Good recipes. Not complicated. Also, we like that it doesn't use the egg replacer often. We can have that here, but it does cause a lot of gas for us. Hope that wasn't too much info!
  • It has basic recipes that you need every day. when DD was first diagnosed I didn't need to know how to make a dairy-free cheesecake, I needed to know how to make breakfast. This book helped me see that I could handle this FA thing.

  • The only reason I find Ryberg's book very useful, and Hagman's not so useful is b/c we avoided rice in addition to gluten! So "useful" in this case is in the eye of the beholder. :)
  • Gf and rice free cookbook was like hitting a jackpot for us.

  • Allergy-Free Cookbook: I just really am in love with Alice Sherwood's cookbook right now. There are some really good, practical and company-worthy meals in there. Everything I have made has been *excellent* and we have a long set of allergens to work with so I think that it great!
  • Sherwood's because it has practical yummy dinners (mostly) and Hagman's because she really taught me how to bake gluten free. Before the book-- I was "muffin queen". Now, there is always a loaf of bread made, I make bagels twice a month, made graham crackers, scones, and even hamburger buns! There is this whole world that was missing for us until this cookbook came along. Note: I have tried a million cookbooks through the library and friends. I loved these books so much- that I actually went out and bought them. That is how good they are (to me)!!!
