New Allergy-Friendly Foods for Kids The Natural Products Expo West, a food and natural products industry trade show, celebrated its 30th anniversary at its recent expo in Anaheim, California. Featuring exhibits from over 1,700 companies, many of which accommodate the allergy community, the event showcased the latest in natural food and products.This spring's expo attracted a record 56,000 industry attendees, including Kids With Food Allergies. KFA's representative tracked down the newest products to share with you—parents of kids with food allergies. Read the report to find out what new products are now available! Beanitos Bean Chips
Description: Round snack chips made from all-natural non-GMO ingredients, with beans and whole grain rice at the top of the ingredient list. Available in two flavors: Black Bean Chips and Pinto Bean & Flax Chips. Beanitos are great with your favorite salsa or dip, as a hearty base for nachos, or right out of the bag as a delicious on-the-go snack that really satisfies without the empty calories of other chips.

Cross-Contamination Issues: Although these chips currently have the words “Always Corn Free” prominently featured on the front of the package, the back of the package warns that they are "made in a facility that may also use soy, dairy, seeds, wheat, corn, eggs, peanuts and tree nuts." The company representatives explained that these allergens are currently in their shared facility, but on completely separate machinery. They hope to have their own allergen-free facility by the end of 2010. Allergen Labeling Policy: Will always put warning if in same facility as any of the “top 8 allergens”. Description:
Almond Butter, available in six varieties: ReadySpread Creamy, ReadySpread Crunchy, ReadySpread with Honey, Homestyle Creamy, Homestyle Crunchy, Homestyle with Honey. The “ReadySpread” have a no-stir formula that includes palm oil, while the “Homestyle” varieties require stirring but contain no added oils. The honey variety is not vegan.Free of these allergens:
Cross-Contamination Issues: All Blue Diamond products are produced in peanut-free facilities. The labels on the almond butter line all clearly state "may contain other tree nuts." A company representative stated that although no other tree nuts are actually used in the facility, they include this warning because other tree nuts might be in with the almonds when they are delivered from the growers (some of which grow other tree nuts in addition to almonds). In addition, there are products that contain soy that are produced in the same facility, although on different production lines. Allergen Labeling Policy: Will always put a warning if made in the same facility as something which contains peanuts, dairy or other tree nuts. Description: Snack-size pouches of all natural freeze-dried fruit, with absolutely nothing added. Currently available in five flavors, with two new flavors – Mandarin Orange and Mixed Berry – available in May 2010. While some stores only carry these in packages that feature pictures of fruit, they are also available in a variety of Disney-themed packages (Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Pixar Cars and Disney Princesses). Description:
Starting in May/June 2010, Cherrybrook Kitchen's Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix, Sugar Cookie Mix and Fudge Brownie Mix packages will now feature the popular Arthur & Friends characters. These products will become “Arthur Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix,” “D.W. Sugar Cookie Mix” and “Buster Fudge Brownie Mix.” Note: these are the same mixes as before, all that is changing is the packaging and product names.

Cross-Contamination Issues: All mixes are prepared in a peanut-free and tree-nut free facility. The mixes are produced on dedicated equipment that does not produce dairy or egg products. Cherrybrook Kitchens has strict manufacturing protocols, and they test for the presence of peanuts, dairy and eggs. Description:
This revolutionary vegan cheese product is free of all the “top 8 allergens”.” Available in “shreds” and “blocks” in Cheddar Style or a mozzarella-like Italian Blend, Daiya melts and tastes very much like a “regular” dairy cheese. Daiya is made entirely from plant-based ingredients. Cross-Contamination Issues: The product is made in an ice cream factory. The boxes all have this allergen warning: "Good manufacturing practices used to segregate ingredients in a facility that also processes peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, and soy." There does not appear to be any risk of cross-contamination. Sensible Foods has two products in their line that contain soy: "Roasted Edamame Crunch Dried Snack" and "Organic Soy Nuts." These soy products are both produced in a completely separate “clean room” in a different area of the facility.
In addition, the machinery on which all of the non-soy products are produced is sterilized between flavors. Somersaults

Although these say they are “dairy and gluten free” there is also a clear allergy warning on the package stating that they are made in the same facility as milk, soy, wheat and sesame. A company representative stated that another company runs a product containing these ingredients in the same facility, but on a different production line.
