New USDA Resource List on Food Allergies and Intolerances for Consumers
The Food and Nutrition Information Center of the U.S. Department of Agriculture has compiled a new resource list for consumers on the topic of food allergies and intolerances. Resources include books, pamphlets, audiovisuals and Web resources. We're happy to tell you that Kids With Food Allergies is one of the nonprofits included on this resource list!
Your Guide to Reporting Problems to FDA

Consumers play an important public health role by reporting to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) any adverse events (unexpected side effects) after using a medical product, or other problems with any products that the agency regulates including foods. Timely reporting allows the agency to take prompt action. There are a number of ways you can report problems to the agency, depending on the type of problem and product. This guide provides tips to help you make your report. |

When you have a problem with a food, drug, or other FDA-regulated product, the FDA wants to hear from you. Here's a new guide on the FDA Web site to learn how to report problems using two of FDA's main reporting systems.

Food Allergies on a Stick: The Risks of Summer Eating
The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) issued a press release this month offering tips for staying safe this summer while managing food allergies.
"People with food allergies must be extra vigilant when eating at summer fairs and festivals," said Amal H. Assa'ad, MD, FAAAAI and Chair of the AAAAI Adverse Reactions to Foods Committee. "There are many questions about ingredients, preparations and possible cross-contamination that if left unanswered could lead to an allergic reaction."
When a School Refuses to Protect a Child with Life-threatening Food Allergies
Wrightslaw provides details about a recent Office of Civil Rights (OCR) investigation of a school district in Virginia. The school district initially determined that one of its students with potentially life-threatening food allergies did not have a disability and was, therefore, not eligible for services and protections under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
For those unfamiliar: Section 504 protects those with disabilities, and for those with life-threatening food allergies who are determined eligible for a "504 Plan," the plan would address the child's allergy-related needs and ensure a safe educational environment.
After the family filed a complaint with the OCR, the OCR investigated and concluded that the school district needed to re-evaluate the student for eligibility for a Section 504 plan due to the potentially life-threatening nature of her food allergies.
Reading (PA) Phillies Food Allergy Awareness Games
Save the dates: July 25 and August 15! The Reading Phillies will be offering two more games this season with peanut free sections. Kids With Food Allergies will have an allergy awareness table there to provide food allergy educational materials to fans in attendance.

Rainbow Scoops
Your kids will love eating this chilled salad with scoop chips so much that they won't notice all of the nutrition hiding in it (or that blue is missing from the rainbow)! Any leftover salad makes an excellent side dish for grilled chicken or a yummy filling for a wrap sandwich.

Made without milk, soy, peanut, egg, tree nut, wheat, gluten, fish, shellfish, sesame, rice.

# of Servings: 10-12
Ingredients
2 15 oz cans black beans
1 11 oz can yellow and white corn
1 small orange bell pepper, chopped
1 small red onion, chopped
30 grape tomatoes, quartered
1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
2 tsp jarred minced garlic
2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
1 Tbsp olive oil
1 tsp kosher salt
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
1 bag "scoop" tortilla or corn chips
Instructions
Drain and rinse black beans and pour into large mixing bowl. Drain and rinse yellow and white corn and add to bowl. Add the remaining ingredients (except the "scoop" chips) and mix until thoroughly combined. Either chill in the refrigerator and pack in a prepared, insulated thermos or pack in a container in an insulated lunch bag with a freezer pack. Eat by scooping with "scoop" chips.
Your kids will love eating this chilled salad with scoop chips so much that they won't notice all of the nutrition hiding in it (or that blue is missing from the rainbow)!
Substitutions
Use dairy, egg, soy, wheat and/or gluten free ingredients as needed. Be sure to check that your tortilla chips are not cross contaminated w/ sesame or cooked in peanut oil if needed.

Made without milk, soy, peanut, egg, tree nut, wheat, gluten, corn, fish, shellfish, sesame.
Category: Main Dishes
# of Servings: 8
Ingredients
2 lbs flank steak
1/4 cup ume plum vinegar
1/4 cup honey
2 Tbsp lemon juice
2 Tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced (optional)
1 1/2 tsp ground ginger
Instructions
Blend all the ingredients. Marinate flank steak for 4 hours, or overnight, turning once. Broil or grill to desired doneness.
Comments
This is great cooked on a really hot grill and served medium-rare.
Substitutions
For citrus-free, use cider vinegar instead of lemon juice.
