Involve Your Child When Making Travel Plans

My 19-year-old son is getting ready to travel without us on a mission trip with his church youth group for the third year in a row— this time to South Dakota. When he was younger, I would never have thought this type of trip was possible. But after years of planning and teaching him to be responsible about his food allergies, I know he can do it.
As he has gotten older and more independent, he hasn't let food allergies hold him back from doing what he's wanted to do. The careful trip planning you do now with your children can prepare them to travel where ever they want to go in the future, even without Mom or Dad.

This issue includes travel tips for you so you can make your vacation successful too. Sit down with your child as you review them and prepare your trip together. I hope you find them helpful.

Best regards,
Lynda Mitchell, KFA President

Allergy and Asthma Travel Tips Checklist
"If you're planning a summer vacation, and you or your child have allergies or asthma, proper planning can help you keep sneezes, sniffles, wheezing and coughing under control. Use the following tips as a checklist from the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) to make sure that allergy misery doesn't derail your vacation fun."

Needle-free Epinephrine Auto-Injectors

A needle-free epinephrine injector is being developed in Europe. The Medical House PLC has designed
three new jet injectors that deliver liquid medications without a needle by forcing a stream of liquid at a high velocity that can penetrate the skin. Advantages of this new injector include eliminating the risks of needle stick injuries, avoiding the need for disposal of contaminated sharps, and helping patients overcome injection anxiety due to aversion of needles.

EpiPen Needles Too Short for Some Kids
"The needles on EpiPen auto-injectors are not long enough to deliver adrenaline into the muscle for as many as one in three children, new research shows."

Over 3/4 of Food Allergic College Students Do Not Carry Epinephrine
"Potentially life-threatening anaphylactic reactions to foods are occurring on college campuses. Only 39.7% of students with food allergy avoided a self-identified food allergen, and more than three fourths did not maintain self-injectable epinephrine. Only 6.6% reported always carrying this device. Such behaviors might place these students at increased risk for adverse events."
