Large, Multidisciplinary Medical Advisory Team Guides KFA Into 2011
KFA's medical advisory board grows by three
Our MAT members represent multiple disciplines from allergy to psychology and serve our mission by composing and reviewing KFA's educational materials, reviewing and approving books in our book shop, providing general guidance for our peer support forums, and designing and conducting food allergy research.
I am delighted and honored to welcome these three professionals to our team:
1. Joy Hogge, PhD, is a psychologist in Mississippi who has been a long-time KFA member. She has first-hand experience with one of the peanut oral immunotherapy studies, and will offer valuable insights on the psychological aspects of living with and managing food allergies. These are clearly issues of major importance to our members and Joy can help us continue to address them.
2. Nancy Payne, MD, is associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Virginia. She has been recognized as an outstanding teacher and mentor, and also initially came to KFA as a member. She is enthusiastic about joining the team, and very interested in improving patient education around food allergy issues.
3. David Stukus, MD, is an allergist/immunologist and assistant professor of pediatrics at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. He is an excellent clinician and educator, and an outstanding advocate for his patients.
We hope you will use the items in this newsletter, our educational resources, recipes and forums to help you plan a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving day.
With warmest regards,
Lynda Mitchell and the KFA team

Should a Pregnant Mother Avoid Peanuts to Protect Her Child from Peanut Allergy?
A new study has found that maternal ingestion of peanut during pregnancy was related to the infants having strong positive allergy tests to peanut, a finding associated with an increased risk of peanut allergy. Additionally, one of the study's authors, Scott Sicherer, M.D. explains to CNN in this video why pregnancy may play a role in kids' nut allergies.
Many Children Have Unnecessarily Restricted Diets Based on Incomplete Information
"Many children, especially those with eczema, are unnecessarily avoiding foods based on incomplete information about potential food allergies, according to researchers at National Jewish Health. The food avoidance poses a nutritional risk for these children, and is often based primarily on data from blood tests." This study found that most of the children in the study passed their food challenge and the food was restored to their diet.
Kids with Skin Rashes After Penicillin May Not Actually Have a Drug Allergy
Skin rashes are common in children treated with antibiotics such as amoxicillin, but research shows that only a few of the children demonstrated sensitivity once tested by skin, blood or oral challenge. Researchers suggest that viral infections may be the cause of the rashes and that allergy is over-diagnosed.

Anaphylaxis In the Middle of the Night
"At 11:30, I had a prompting to wake up and check on her—my first thought was that she needed to go potty—but after listening for a moment, I heard a croupy cough. I ran to check on her and noticed her grabbing at her throat and her lips were swollen."
