DOT Seeking Public Comments on Air Travel for Persons with Peanut Allergies
Department of Transportation Docket Number DOT-OST-2010-0140

The DOT is soliciting public comment until 08/09/10 on three options to providing greater access to air travel for persons with peanut allergies:

1. Banning the serving of peanuts and all peanut products by both U.S. and foreign carriers on flights covered by DOT's disability rule;
2. Banning the serving of peanuts and all peanut products on all such flights where a passenger with a peanut allergy is on board and has requested a peanut-free flight in advance;
3. Requiring a peanut-free buffer zone in the immediate area of a passenger with a medically-documented severe allergy to peanuts if a passenger has requested a peanut-free flight in advance.

Breaking News: DOT Backs Off on Proposed Peanut Ban on Planes
DOT will still accept public comments, but has recinded its proposed rule to ban peanuts because a federal appropriations act specifies "no federal money can be used to ban peanuts or require a peanut-free buffer zone in any air carrier until at least 90 days after Congress and the DOT receive a peer-reviewed scientific study that determines peanut allergy sufferers can get a severe reaction on an airplane."

When Food Hurts
"Robyn Nasuti watched with alarm as her son's skin crusted over in rashes again and again, his nights bereft of sleep. One day, a nibble of his father's birthday cake erupted into hives, a swollen face, and a trip to the emergency room. No one could figure out why young Brett kept turning so sick".

New and Lost
"My daughter is 9 1/2 months old and was just recently diagnosed with peanut and egg allergies. We are scheduled with an allergist but can't get in to see him until the end of July. I am on a waiting list for cancellations. The reason I am so lost is my daughter seems to get hives with almost everything she eats, even things that have no peanut or egg and I have checked with the manufacturers about cross contamination."

Rules for Granny's House
"When we first got the diagnosis, my mom went through the house and got rid of all nuts, or stored them outside in a separate pantry. I get over there today and there is a big open jar of walnuts on the kitchen counter, Reese's peanut butter cups filling the freezer, and a box of mixed nuts sitting a few feet from my daughter's doll house in the bedroom. And, of course, my daughter winds up with some hives around her mouth before we leave... "
