Moving Forward with You in 2010
We're busily planning for 2010 and hope we can count on you to help make our plans for families a reality. KFA is a one-of-a-kind organization—there is no other in the nation like it. KFA's ability to provide personalized food and cooking support 24/7, share important educational resources, and bring families together to provide a network of real-time support is unparalleled. To continue our mission in 2010, we need your support today.
Our plans for 2010 will help you to:
- Connect in person with other parents raising children with food allergies in your local community. With plans underway to launch our new KFA Friends Connection program, this will become a reality.
- Better manage a food allergy lifestyle. With plans to launch our new KFA Welcome Program, new and renewing members will soon receive a free educational publication introducing them to resources critical to managing food allergy.
- Gain more skills to cook and bake allergen-free. This means we need to strengthen our Safe Eats recipe database and add more tools and resources for food shopping, cooking and baking.
Your donation, large or small, is crucial for us to continue our efforts.
Even in these tough economic times, KFA has done an outstanding job of stewarding its funding so that it can educate and support as many families as possible. Our ability to help even more families and provide more resources faster is limited not by our desire, but by raising the funds to pay for the programs.
The value of every dollar you donate to KFA increases exponentially in the form of life-changing work we can do for families. Your gift to KFA really does make a difference.
Thank you so much for your support this year.
Kristin Johnston,
Director
KFA Board of Directors

Holidays Pose Extra Risks for Those with Allergies
KFA members have found hidden allergens in these holiday dangers and, in some cases, reported allergic reactions to them:
1. Christmas trees
2. Store-bought and homemade crafts and ornaments
3. Gift wrapping (Report of a gift that was wrapped in a used pizza box)
4. Holiday parades (Report of a child tripping and falling into goat's milk)
5. Scented candles
6. Wood logs (Duraflame™ logs contain crushed nut shells.)
7. Gifts (Holiday-themed candies may be included inside your child's gifts from others.)
8. Holiday dinners and parties
9. The Nutcracker (Some theaters serve warm nuts during intermission.)
10. Santa (Some elves pass out candy while children wait in line.)
For more information about holiday dangers, read these articles from National Jewish Health and U.S. News.

Recently, several of our members have dealt with anaphylaxis. By reading their stories, you can become better prepared to handle this emergency.
I had to give epinephrine on our Thanksgiving vacation
"Despite lots of planning and prep ahead of time, my mother-in-law poured regular cow's milk on my daughter's cereal while I was checking online to see if the bacon was safe for her."
Three shots of Epi and an ER visit
"Last night, around 11pm, I ate a piece of candy, which I found out later was made in a facility with wheat and soy. About fifteen minutes later, my face got really itchy and my face and arms were red. I looked down and I had hives literally from head to toe. I started to also have trouble breathing. So I pulled out my Epi and shot myself."
This story is another reminder that individually-wrapped candies may not have accurate labeling information listed on them; and unfortunately, cross-contamination information is labeled voluntarily by food manufacturers.
