Announcements

Food Allergy Resources

Each month, KFA provides new or updated food allergy articles to educate families, caregivers and the public about different topics regarding food allergies. Premium resources are available to KFA Family Members only.

Available to the public: The articles below are available to all Web site visitors.
NEW! Hidden Allergen Names on Labels (with Travel-Size Cards)

Allergens may be lurking in labels under unfamiliar names. Would you know to search for "lysozyme" if your child is allergic to eggs? Or "arachis" if your child is allergic to peanuts? Refer to KFA's avoidance lists when shopping for your food-allergic child. Remember: a product's ingredient list can change without warning, so read all labels carefully before consumption, even if it has been eaten safely in the past.

Many foods and products are not covered by FDA food allergen labeling laws, so it is important to know how to read labels for the hidden names for allergens. Products that are exempt from plain English labeling rules include foods that are not regulated by the FDA, cosmetics and personal care products, prescription and over-the-counter medications or supplements, pet food, toys and crafts.

Do you kiss your food allergic child?
"I haven't kissed my son on the face (just kissed the top of his head) since he was 10 months old. Now, he is six, his allergies are *somewhat* understood, and (I feel) they are well-managed. He read The Kissing Hand on the first day of Kindergarten, and has told me that he wants me to kiss his hand like the mom in the book. What do I do?"

Parents share their stories about eating their child's allergens, and whether or not they kiss their child with their lips. Sometimes it is hard to find a "comfort zone" that allows you to enjoy the simple things in life without having anxiety about potential reactions.

All tricks, no treats: a food-free Halloween
Kids will enjoy this fun alternative to candy for "trick-or-treating".

Needing reassurance - H1N1, egg allergy, Tamiflu
Parents discuss their fears of the flu and food allergy concerns about Tamiflu and flu vaccinations.

Teacher Gave Boy Peanuts, Hoped Allergy Would Make Him Too Sick for Trip
"The mother of an 8-year-old autistic boy with severe peanut allergies said Friday that an Indianapolis teacher gave her son a peanut-filled candy bar in hopes of making him sick so he wouldn't go on a field trip."

Research Study of a Coping Skills Group for Children with Food Allergy
Children's Hospital Boston is conducting a research study to investigate the usefulness of a group program for children with food allergy ages 9 to 12 years and their parents. The group is designed to help children develop coping skills to manage food allergies, as well as manage stress and anxiety that can go along with having food allergies. We hope that results of the study will help us to improve the services offered to children with food allergies and their families in the future.

If you participate in the study, you and your child will be asked to attend four 90-minute group sessions at Children's Hospital Boston. Additionally, you and your child will be asked to attend two other study visits at Children's Hospital Boston: the first within two weeks prior to the first group session, and the second about a month after the last group session. During these visits, you will be asked to complete questionnaires about your child's medical history and the impact of food allergy on your and your child's quality of life. Your child will be asked to complete questionnaires about the impact of food allergies on quality of life, attitudes about food allergies, and confidence in completing allergy management tasks. The study questionnaires will take approximately 45 minutes to complete. There is no cost to participate in the study. Participating families will receive parking vouchers and gift certificates to Barnes & Noble.

This research is being conducted by Jennifer LeBovidge, Ph.D., Michael Pistiner, M.D., M.M.Sc., and Lynda Schneider, M.D. If you are interested in participating or have questions, please contact Heather Strauch, the study coordinator, at (617) 355-2195.
