Teens and Kids with Food Allergies Need to be Careful about Kissing
|
|
Kissing becomes a problem when anyone from a grandparent to a date consumes an allergen before smooching a food-allergic child or teen.
"A peck on the cheek from a parent or relative will almost always only result in a local reaction such as a welt or hive; it's very unlikely to cause any severe reaction that you’d be worried about," Dr. Roger Friedman, |
Clinical Professor of Allergy, Immunology, and Pediatrics at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio explained. [Read More]
Tubey Monkeys: Helping Kids Cope with their Stomach Tubes
| Coping with a G-Tube (Gastrostomy Tube) can be difficult for a young child, and some children with severe food allergies or conditions like eosinophilic disorders will require one so the children can receive complete nutrition. Three moms, who are members of Kids With Food Allergies, have made that a little easier with the help of a "Tubey Monkey." By performing "surgery" on a plush monkey, they have helped their children understand and feel better about the procedure and their G-Tubes. [Read More]

News
Food-Allergic Children with Asthma May Require Extra Emergency Medication
New research findings suggest that some food-allergic children may not be equipped with enough potentially life-saving medication to reverse a severe allergic reaction.
According to research to be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, a second dose of epinephrine - the drug of choice for treating severe allergic reactions - was needed in nearly 1-of-5 cases of food-induced anaphylaxis in children.
Nearly all patients who required multiple doses of epinephrine also suffered from asthma.
Man's Death a Stark Reminder of Food Allergy Risks
The Sunday July 4th Everett, WA Herald details a sad account of a young man with a peanut allergy who died from anaphylaxis after taking a bite out of a cookie while away from home. Our sincere condolences to his family and friends.
Postponing Cow's Milk May Not Prevent Allergy
A study published in the July 2008 issue of Pediatrics found that delaying the introduction of cow's milk may increase, rather than decrease, the risk that a child will develop allergies in the first 2 years of life.

Peanut Butter Grinder in Store
"We walked through the aisle that has the peanut butter shelves and right in the middle of all of the jars was a large cubby with a giant fresh peanut butter grinding machine. It was self-serve and the store had loaded the top with shelled peanuts and placed little plastic cups for people to make their own fresh peanut butter."
Parents discuss their concerns about peanut butter grinders, bulk bins and nut bars in many natural food stores and grocery stores.
Lunch Boxes and Safe Treats
"I know summer just began, but looking at the calendar this morning - eight weeks doesn't seem like that long.
My son will be going to first grade and eating a full lunch at school for the first time this year. I'd love to hear everyone's recommendations on the different types of lunch boxes. I would want something that is easy to clean often and holds up well. My son also likes it to look "cool." Also, what kind of "safe treats" do you put in your child's safe treats box?"
Parents discuss the different types of lunch boxes, snacks and treats for school for kids with food allergies.
