No Tricks, Please!

Halloween is a challenging time for those of us raising children with food allergies. And with October just around the corner, I'm sure you are already wondering how your children will be able to safely enjoy the holiday.

pumkinsI'd like to give you a head start on Halloween planning with a reminder about trick-or-treating hazards. My own son suffered an anaphylactic reaction as a toddler after I let him carry a wrapped candy - he bit into it right through the paper wrapper. So, my first piece of advice is to not let children carry allergenic candy even if it's wrapped!

KFA has helpful holiday resources, a great collection of Safe Eats™ recipes, and a supportive and caring online community where you can connect with other parents preparing for Halloween. See what they are all doing, ask questions or bounce ideas off other parents who really understand the special challenges Halloween presents for children with food allergies.

I invite you to download our free eight page "Celebrating Halloween With Food Allergies"  PDF  booklet filled with activities to replace trick-or-treating, craft recipes, Halloween games, school party ideas, and Halloween treat recipes. Share it with friends, teachers and others to give them some ideas on how to safely include your child in Halloween activities.

Lastly, our third annual Fall Special Report of New Allergy-Friendly Foods for Kids will be out soon!

Warmly,
Lynda Mitchell
President

Announcements
A Wonderful KFA Family Fun Expo

KFA's Family Fun Expo on 9/13 was a wonderful day! We had more than 500 registered attendees, beautiful sunshine and two dozen businesses handing out samples. As presenting sponsor, Whole Foods Market North Wales did an outstanding job helping us make this event successful. The children really enjoyed Rob Malissa, master magician, Kyle Dine's "Food Allergy Music For Kids" performance and the dance-a-thon. Thanks to platinum sponsor Nutricia North America for making Kyle's performance possible.

Thanks to our sponsors, donors, attendees, volunteers and fundraisers who made our day a very special one for all. Our goal was to organize an event where children and their families could enjoy themselves in a relaxed environment - one where they could find some new foods to sample, meet other families, and engage the children in some fun allergy education. Based on the comments we received, we definitely succeeded!

Allergy Grocer to reopen in October!
Popular online grocery store Allergy Grocer will be reopening in October. "Allergy Grocer's new website design will feature direct instant messaging during normal business hours and has updated FAQ's and resource links."

Do you have to call every company to check on food?
Sometimes it's really hard to know whether a product is safe or not based on the labeling alone. “May contains” types of statements are strictly voluntary and are not required by law. Therefore, if you don't see a “may contain” type of advisory statement, how do you know if a product is safe or not? Parents share their insights.

News

Self-Reported Allergic Reactions to Peanut & Tree Nuts Occurring on Airlines
As reported by researchers at the University of Michigan in the August issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, "Allergic reactions to peanut and tree nut have continued to occur on commercial aircraft. Reaction severity appears poorly perceived. Thirty-three percent reported symptoms consistent with anaphylaxis, but epinephrine, available on all flights either with the passenger themselves or in the on-board medical kit, was used in only 10% of reactions, potentially a dangerous discrepancy. Denial of requests for special accommodations for a food allergy is an unfortunate reality, because many airlines have firmly written policies that accommodations will not be made."

"I'm Allergic to My World"
For kids with severe allergies, certain foods are not just dangerous, they're deadly. Watch Dr. Robert Wood from Johns Hopkins University on Nick News with Linda Ellerbee on Sunday, September 27 for the special segment entitled, "I'm Allergic to My World."
