KFA Welcomes Dr. Todd Green as Chair of Medical Advisory Team

I am honored to announce that Todd Green, M.D., Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Allergy/Immunology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, has accepted the role of Chair of KFA's Medical Advisory Team (MAT). Dr. Green has been a member of KFA's Medical Advisory Team since 2007.

Dr. Green received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh and completed his allergy fellowship at Duke University. He is board certified in Pediatrics and in Allergy and Immunology. Dr. Green has published numerous peer reviewed journal articles on peanut allergy and other food allergy topics.

Kimberly Khosla, M.D., Chair since 2004, will remain on the MAT as a member. Dr. Khosla was instrumental in organizing the MAT and making sure that KFA's educational program offerings are accurate and trustworthy. I thank her sincerely for her leadership and guidance over these past five years and look forward to working with both in their new roles for KFA.

Kind regards,

Lynda Mitchell
President

AAAAI Offers Flu Advice for Asthma and Allergy Sufferers
"According to the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, 67% of children who died with the new H1N1 flu virus had at least one high-risk medical condition. Any individual with an underlying respiratory condition such as asthma is more likely to experience serious health problems if he or she contracts the flu, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI)."

Egg Allergy Flu Vaccine Case Study (PDF)
This case study shows what the AAAAI recommends doing for flu vaccinations in egg-allergic and at-risk (asthmatic) individuals. It describes the multi-step process of testing the safety of the vaccine on those with egg allergy.

AAAAI Treatment Guidelines to Administering the H1N1 Influenza Vaccine in Patients with Suspected Egg Allergy (PDF)
"Previous experience with seasonal influenza vaccines (which also contain egg antigen) suggests that many people with diagnosed or suspected egg allergy can receive influenza vaccination safely, if precautions are followed. This paper offers guidance on the evaluation of the patient with suspected egg allergy who needs H1N1 vaccination, and outlines precautionary measures that can enhance the safe administration of vaccine."

Extra Care Needed to Shield Those Who Can't Get H1N1 Flu Vaccine
"'If there seems to be a very strong reaction, you have to take it on a case by case basis, but most egg-allergic individuals can get flu vaccine with appropriate management,' said Dr. Wesley Burks, chief of pediatric allergy and immunology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C."

I Just Found Out Why a Former Friend Won't Talk to Me Anymore
"I have a neighbor who I was never really close with, but we did things together with our kids. She hasn't spoken to me in almost a year— even though I can literally see her house from my front window... Well, I just found out from a mutual friend the reason she ignores me."

Food allergies can separate your true friends from the rest.

New School Wellness Policy
New wellness policies being implemented in schools across the country may have a secondary benefit to those of us sending our food-allergic children off to school: some schools are banning foods and sugary treats in the classrooms for everyone.
