Food Allergy-Friendly Family Fun Events
The weather on the East Coast is finally warming up — it is so wonderful to see the sun shining after a gloomy spring so we can head outside to enjoy more outdoor activities.
There are a number of local food allergy-friendly events around the country to enjoy this year— from peanut-free baseball games to food allergy awareness music events. I'm delighted to tell you that one of them will be sponsored by KFA: our first official family event — an outdoor expo with music, games and activities for children — in the greater Philadelphia area, on September 13! More information about a number of these events is in this issue.
With the change in season, be careful when you purchase new products. Always read labels, every time —even for non-food items like sunscreen, flower seeds or potting soil. You just never know where food allergens may hide. We have some examples for you in this issue to watch out for when you shop.
Kind regards,
Lynda Mitchell and the KFA Team
ALERT! Always Read Labels
Thanks to Theresa Green for alerting us to the fact that packages of Buzzy® flower seeds in the $1.00 section of Target have labels warning that they contain peanut and tree nut shells. The warnings are in very fine print on the packaging. This serves as an excellent reminder to read labels for even non-food items as they may contain food ingredients.
However, it is important to know that non-food items are not required to have ingredient labels, so for many products you will need to call the manufacturer to confirm safety for your food allergic child.
Food Allergy Resources
We've updated our Food Allergy Resources section to be more user-friendly and provide an easier way for you to find the information you need, organized by topic.

I hope you don't believe this about restaurant grills
"Sometimes misinformation is out there—know your facts and be skeptical about what you read. Grills CAN result in cross contamination of foods cooked on them."
Members react to a statement made by a restaurant manager who wrongfully claims that cross-contamination of allergens doesn't occur on grills.
