KFA Editorial Offers Insights for Doctors Caring for Food-Allergic Students
KFA medical advisors Dr. Matthew Greenhawt, Dr. Michael Pistiner and Dr. Todd Green, along with KFA President Lynda Mitchell, recently submitted an editorial called, "Empathy, Understanding, and Objectivity Need to Prevail for Students with Food Allergies," to the current issue of Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology that is in press now. Annals is the peer-reviewed journal published by the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.
The editorial is a formal comment offering insights and recommendations on how allergists and non-allergists caring for students with food allergies have an opportunity to promote food allergy awareness, highlight the difficulties of food avoidance and emphasize the need for a shared responsibility to protect these vulnerable children. The editorial suggests that the allergist be the patient advocate as well as a voice of reason in creating recommendations for students with food allergies — with the goal of allowing all children to attend school safely and with as few restrictions as possible.
This editorial will be published in an upcoming issue of Annals.

Always Read Labels ALERT!
We have received information about the following products and are issuing a reminder to always read the ingredient labels on foods before purchasing — because you may find a surprise!
*Mighty Milk has "Contains No Milk" on their logo. However, when you read the ingredients, the product does contain milk ingredients (sodium caseinate, milk protein isolate, whey) and has an allergen statement that states, "This product contains ingredients derived from milk and soy."
*Omega-3 fatty acids
added to products, such as peanut butter and orange juice, can contain fish (anchovy and/or sardine).
*Eggs in cheese? A KFA member recently found Grana Padano (a hard cheese) that contains "egg white lysozyme" in the ingredients list.
*Post® Pebbles Cereals are now labeled gluten free. Since stores may still carry the older versions, double check the boxes before you purchase
Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Pebbles or Marshmallow Pebbles.
*A KFA member has reported being pleasantly surprised to find Chef Boyardee® Big Italian
Sausage Ravioli does not contain milk or egg in the ingredients listing. The allergen statement says the product contains soy and wheat. (Please confirm milk and egg cross-contamination concerns yourself before purchasing.)
*Oroweat® 100% Whole Wheat bread has a shared facility warning for milk and tree nuts. Orowheat® Lite 100% Whole Wheat bread contains milk.
*McCormick® makes imitation almond extract (from apricot pits) and pure almond extract (from almond oil).

KFA is a Charity in Good Standing with the IRS
The IRS recently published its first Automatic Revocation of Exemption List of approximately 275,000 nonprofits whose tax-exempt status has been revoked because they failed to file a Form 990, 990-N, 990-EZ, or 990-PF for three consecutive years.
KFA is in good standing with the IRS — we file our Form 990 annually.

The Best Advice I've Gotten on Raising a Child with Food Allergies
"I was thinking today about how the best advice I've gotten on raising a child with food allergies was something someone said here on KFA — instead of going through life trying to match treats, you are better off teaching your child that when everyone else gets a treat, they will get one too, but it may be totally different."
What is the best advice that you have received here on KFA?
