KFA Welcomes Two New Members to Our Board of Directors
We are pleased to announce that Catherine Fishman, president of CMF Small Business Accounting, and Jessica Cohen, founder and chief branding officer of Company Mom, LLC, and marketing director at BucksMontStyle.com, were recently elected to the board of directors for Kids With Food Allergies.
Fishman earned her M.B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin. She has prior service on several nonprofit boards of directors. In addition to serving as a board member for KFA, she has also taken on the role of treasurer. Cathy shares her expertise in strategic planning as well as financial control and information systems.
Cohen earned her undergraduate degree in advertising and sociology from Pennsylvania State University and is the parent of a son with food allergies. She has more than a dozen years' experience in market research, and will be sharing her expertise in strategic marketing, branding and publishing.
We are grateful for their volunteer service as board members and for helping us shape the future direction of KFA.
With warm regards,
Lynda Mitchell
President
ALERT! Read Labels Carefully: Five Recent Label Changes
Recently, several food labels have changed, so this is a great reminder to read labels every time you purchase a product. Ingredients or manufacturing processes can change at any time. Please keep in mind that cross-contamination warnings (such as "may contain..." or "made on the same equipment that processes...") are voluntary and not required to be disclosed on labels.
1. Silk Soymilk labels now state, "May contain almonds or coconut,"
because the soymilk may be manufactured on equipment that is used by products that contain almond or coconut. Not all containers have this warning yet.
2. Clabber Girl Baking Powder labels now state, "Manufactured on equipment that also processes wheat, soy, milk and egg." The front of the can states they are still producing in a peanut-free facility. Old cans claimed, "Gluten Free".
3. Wheaties cereal states, "May contain almonds." Wheaties Fuel cereal states, "May contain almonds or peanuts."
4. Hostess Cupcakes are labeled with a "May contain walnuts" warning. Some Hostess Donettes are now labeled as "May contain walnuts and pecans."
5. According to the Spangler candy website, Dum Dum
Gum Pops and Dum Dum Chewy Pops made in the USA are free of peanuts, tree nuts, egg, gluten, and milk. But be aware that Dum Dum Gum Pops and Dum Dum Chewy Pops made in Brazil are manufactured in a facility where peanuts and milk are used in the manufacturing of other products. Please check the back panel of the item you are purchasing for country of origin. This information is only on the original bag, not on the individual wrappers.
NEW! Raising a Child with Food Allergies Changes Your Life
Watch videos from KFA on our new YouTube Channel — including a PSA to show ways a diagnosis of food allergies change your life and your child's life. Parents explain what has happened to their children during an allergic reaction, the isolation it can create, and the rollercoaster of emotions that goes along with raising a child with food allergies.

Study Finds High Rate of ER Trips for Food Allergies
"Between 2001 and 2005, researchers estimate that Americans made just over a million visits to the ER for allergic reactions to food. That averages out to about 200,000 ER trips each year, including an estimated 90,000 visits for serious, sometimes life-threatening, allergic reactions known as anaphylaxis."
President Obama Signs Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Management Act
The Secretary of Health and Human Services and Secretary of Education will now develop guidelines to be used on a voluntary basis to develop plans for individuals to manage the risk of food allergy and anaphylaxis in schools and early childhood education programs. Schools that implement the new guidelines will be eligible for a grant to help pay for staff training, student education, parent outreach or medical supplies such as epinephrine autoinjectors or hand wipes.
Doctors Take Crack at Nut Allergy
"Dozens of adults and kids who have long feared peanuts are lining up for a study at a Boston hospital in which doctors will expose them to the pesky nut in hopes of finding a cure to the deadly allergy."
AAAAI: Why Is My Child's School Nut Free?
"The basis for peanut and tree nut-free schools has to do with the somewhat unique nature of these food allergies. Individuals with peanut and tree nut allergies can react to traces of nut dust in the air."
