Living the Food Allergy Lifestyle
I stumbled upon KFA exactly five years ago, and I can still remember that day...though it feels as if it were a lifetime ago. The transition to the food allergy lifestyle can be bumpy, stressful, and sometimes just agonizing; but what made it easier for me was connecting with other parents on KFA. These parents, especially "Ol' Timers," as I refer to them fondly, have helped me with creative food ideas, tweaking recipes, adjusting to the new lifestyle, and other advice that can't be found anywhere else.
Today, I consider myself honored to be among the "Ol' Timers." Recently, my family has successfully navigated a road trip and camping, hosted a graduation party and family reunion, sent our kids to a sleepover, and my children performed in a major dance production.
KFA is unique in that it combines the largest online community dedicated to those raising children with food allergies with resources, tools, and educational content reviewed by our Medical Advisory Team, so it is accurate and trustworthy. Without the transfer of knowledge from experienced parents to "newbie" parents, and without our educational component, our community wouldn't be complete. I encourage you to renew your membership when it expires —
for your own benefit as well as that of others following in your footsteps.
This issue of eNews is full of information to help you with adjusting to the food allergy lifestyle and managing your child's allergies, so they are happy, safe, and healthy. From music to books, summer recipes to airport security, there's something for everyone.
Warmly,
Melanie Carver, aka "melkorey"— eNews Editor
and POFAK "Ol' Timer"

FDA: Updated Information on Singulair, Accolate, and Zyflo
"Neuropsychiatric events have been reported in some patients taking montelukast (Singulair), zafirlukast (Accolate), and zileuton (Zyflo and Zyflo CR). The FDA has requested that manufacturers include a precaution in the drug prescribing information (drug labeling).
Montelukast is used to treat asthma, the symptoms of allergic rhinitis (sneezing, stuffy nose, runny nose, itching of the nose), and to prevent exercise-induced asthma. Zafirlukast and zileuton are used to treat asthma.
The reported neuropsychiatric events include post-market cases of agitation, aggression, anxiousness, dream abnormalities and hallucinations, depression, insomnia, irritability, restlessness, suicidal thinking and behavior (including suicide), and tremor."
The FDA encourages patients to talk with their healthcare providers if these events occur.
Anaphylaxis in the Community: Learning from the Survivors
"The most important emergency treatment for anaphylaxis (a sudden serious allergic reaction) is an epinephrine injection. In most cases of death from anaphylaxis in the community, the epinephrine injection either has not been given at all, given too late or given in too low a dose."
AAAAI: The Truth About Pet Allergies
The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology debunks pet allergy myths and offers tips on how to reduce your suffering if you own a pet and are allergic to it.
